Michael Thompson is a Jamaican who now resides in New York. His work has been published both in
Jamaica and the United States. He studied Art at the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston Jamaica and also at the School of Visual Art
in New York. While studying in Jamaica Michael won many art competitions which took him on international excursions to Europe. In 1989 he was a member of
the Jamaican delegation that took part in the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow.
Michael works as a graphic consultant with such companies and organizations as Merrill
Lynch, Aventis Pharmaceutical, and The National Urban League. In his work Michael is able
to combine a passion for digital photography with a mastery of digital imaging techniques.
For Michael, a computer is not only a shortcut for what is possible with a camera. It makes
possible what’s not possible in other media and enables flexibility and options for creative
exploration. Having so many options requires a disciplined selectivity. A print is never final. Art lies in knowing when to stop.
Michael’s explorations run the gamut from the commonplace to the exotic, from the mundane
to the extraordinary. Each individual image, each snippet of emotion, reaction or sensation is a component of a larger message.
